Evolution of calendar
The history of calendars, that is, of people creating and using methods for keeping track of days and larger divisions of time, covers a practice with very ancient roots.
A number of prehistoric structures were used for keeping the track of the time, days and the course of the solar year. The first ancient calendar was observed in the Bronze Age and it was dependent on the development of writing in the Ancient Near East, the Sumerian, and the Egyptian Calendars.
In the Iron Age, a large number of calendar system of Ancient Near East appeared, which were based on the Babylonian Calendar. This includes the calendar system of Persian Empire which gave rise to the Hebrew Calendar and Zoroastrian Calendar.
In the Hellenistic period, a great number of Hellenic Calendars were developed which also influenced the calendars outside the Greek sphere and in turn gave rise to the Ancient Roman Calendars and the Hindu Calendars.
These ancient calendars were usually lunisolar and depended on the introduction of intercalary months for the alignment of solar and lunar years. However, in 45 BCE, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar by introducing an algorithm which involves a leap year after every four years.
The Gregorian calendar which is used today as the de facto calendar for secular purposes is reformed on the basis of the Roman Calendars.
In the Middle Ages, various calendars systems were followed – Christian Europe in European countries, Bulgar Calendars in Central Asia. In the Medieval Ages, the Icelandic and the Hindu Calendars were introduced.
While the Gregorian Calendars are now used in worldwide for secular purposes, some of the ancient calendars are used for the social or religious purposes, including the Hindu Calendar, the Hebrew Calendar, the Islamic Calendar, the Zoroastrian Calendar etc.
Until before the Russian Revolution in 1917, Russia had not converted to the Gregorian calendar. And the funny thing that happened in the year 1908, the Russian Olympic team arrived 12 days late to the London Olympics Game because of not following the Gregorian calendar.
So, next time you check the calendar, appreciate it noble evolution.
Why do we use a calendar?
Gregorian calendar is accepted worldwide because it is one of the most accurate calendars and it is required to be adjusted only one day in every four years. Hence it is a great improvement than the previous calendar system which needed to be adjusted often by weeks and months.
Logically, if all countries use the different calendars then it would be difficult to maintain the international relations and likewise, everything else will be very complicated.
So think how your life would be, if all the calendars of the world disappear. Have you ever thought about it? You cannot, even for a second. We all use the calendars for different purposes. A calendar has its own significance in the lives of different people. The most popular reasons people use the calendars are:

- Planning the events according to days
- Alleviating the stress and anxiety
- To circle the important dates
- For noting down the particular event dates and time
- Know the upcoming festival dates

So, next time someone asks you about using the calendar, answer them how efficiently you use it.
Types of calendar
Basically, there are three different types of calendars – lunar, solar, and lunisolar or solilunar.
A Lunar Calendar is based on the rotation of the Moon around Earth and is used mainly for religious purposes. Solar calendars are concerned with Sun and are based on the Earth’s rotation around the Sun. Lunisolar or Solilunar calendars are the combination of both Lunar and Solar Calendars. These calendars are basically solar calendars with dates indicating the moon phase.
Other types of Calendars:
These are the calendars which are most widely used and are followed around the world. The calendars are classified as
- On the basis of rules
These calendars are independent of the astronomical events and completely followed the rules – number of days in a month, no of months in a year, weeks in a month etc. Examples of this type of calendar are the Gregorian calendar, the Maya calendar, and the Julian calendar.
The Mayans were the experts in Mathematics algorithm and astronomy and the oldest known measurement of the year was given by them.
- On the basis of astronomical calculations
Originally, these calendars were based on astronomical observation. But the observation has been replaced by the calculations of the times of astronomical events. The Jewish calendar and the Chinese calendar are the examples of this type of calendar.
The Chinese calendar is a very old Solilunar calendar with 12-year cycles. Each year has 12 months and each cycle is related to a specific animal. The Chinese year is symbolised by one of 12 animals — the rat, ox, sheep, monkey, rooster, tiger, rabbit, dragon, dog, pig, snake, and the horse — and one of the five elements — fire, water, wood, metal, and earth.
- On the basis of astronomical observation
These types of calendars require an observation of celestial phenomena in order to decide either when a month should begin or when an extra month is to be added. The example of this type of calendar is the Islamic calendar.
A month in the Islamic calendar begins when the human eye sights the first lunar crescent. An Islamic year has 12 months and the calendar is a pure lunar calendar.
- Other important and ancient calendars
The other most significant and widely followed calendars are the Hindu calendar, the Gregorian calendar, the Persian calendar and the Hebrew calendar.
The Hindu calendar is a lunisolar type and was reformed in 1957. There are 12 lunar months and each month begins with the new moon before sunrise. The calendar starts on Baisakhi.
The Persian calendar is the oldest calendar and is considered as one of the most accurate solar calendars. It is based on the astronomical measurements.
The Hebrew calendar is a solilunar calendar and a very old calendar that contains 12 months. A leap month occurs once in every three years.

When you pull up your calendar, you are simply seeing a view of all electronic time demands – important dates, appointments, and events that you stored previously.
A calendar, then, is a view. But now it is electronic, and you can store as many time demands as you want without ever running out of space. You can even have a different number of views that have nothing to do with the limits of the written or printed page.
The act of looking at your calendar has transformed into a dynamic activity in which you can change the different views while changing items around. You can easily create, rearrange, lengthen, shorten, and delete the events, appointments, and important dates. The latest technology of the calendar system in the form of smartphones, tablets, and laptops had made it easier to perform these changes every day without any effort.
The ability to manage the greater number of time demands – events, appointments etc. has become easier as we develop the habit of storing a greater percentage of more time demands in devices. The technology had enabled and mastered the elegance and power of using different views to see only the information that we need at the particular right time.
The important dates, events, and appointments in this new world reside in an electronic cloud which is accessed by a screen that provides us with a real-time view instead of sitting on a paper calendar, in a hand-held gadget, or on a hard drive. Getting stuff wet is no longer a problem, and neither is a battery failure or a crash, due to the presence of fail-proof backups. Even when we forget our favorite device at home, we are never without our cloud of time demands because other methods can be used to pull up different views.
With the redefinition of a calendar as a view of time demands and the cloud as the ultimate storage location, we can be more productive. With the technology, one day, we will even have the watches that can pull up a calendar view.
